The Man Who Taught Me to Love Bees, Gardens, and Simple Living

Long before Honey We Got Bees began, there was my grandpa — a hardworking farmer, tailor, gardener, and beekeeper who taught me the value of patience, self-sufficiency, and caring for the natural world. This is a story about childhood summers in rural Romania, lessons passed down through generations, and how a few hives in a vineyard eventually inspired our own beekeeping journey.

Growing up, I spent many summers at my grandpa's house in a small village on the border between Romania and Moldova.

He was a gentle, hardworking man who took great pride in being self-sufficient. He worked a full-time job in agriculture, spent his weekends as the village tailor, and somehow still found time to tend his vegetable gardens, flowers, vineyards, horses, and the many other animals he kept on his small holding.

And he loved his bees.

There were always hives in the vineyard, and on warm summer days we'd spend hours inspecting them together. At the time, I didn't fully appreciate how fascinating bees were, or how fondly I would look back on those moments years later.

My grandpa had a huge influence on the person I am today. The last time I saw him, I told him about the raised beds Rob and I had built at home, and he happily shared advice on how to make our little garden as productive as possible. I remember how pleased he seemed that someone had listened, learned, and was putting his knowledge to good use.

Now, whenever I'm in the apiary, I can't help but think of him.

And I often wonder how proud he would be to know that we have bees too. 💛🐝
